Facial Implants

Introduction

Like it or not, most of us include the way someone ‘looks’ into our judgement of them in total. Facial features are the most noticed, with many attributes of aging giving a somewhat erroneous appearance of scowling.

Whilst dermal fillers can add bulk to fill out wrinkles and deeper lines, there are times when the loss of facial fat and subsequent contour requires a more aggressive solution.

The two most popular face implants are for the cheeks, jaw and the chin. Facial implants will not change your overall look, rather, they will enhance and rejuvenate your natural features.

Mature patients often have an implant placed in conjunction with another cosmetic procedure. For example, during a facelift, a patient may wish to have implants placed over the cheekbones to help restore a more youthful appearance. Implants may also be selected to fill out a face that appears "sunken" or tired.

Cheek Implants

Cheeks are the first area where loss of contour through aging can noticed. In addition, high cheekbones appear to add to overall beauty structure of the face. As such, cheek implants have become a routine cosmetic operation.

A local anaesthetic with an oral sedative or a general anaesthetic is used, depending upon the implant type and patient sensitivity.

The implant is placed internally through upper lip or externally via your lower eyelid. Sutures will vary depending on whether they're internal or external.

The procedure take about an hour.

Chin Implant

Chins do not suffer greatly from aging, but are a popular implant, especially with men. A strong, angular and pronounced jaw is universally pleasing attribute, and is even synonymous with power and good breeding.

The implant is placed internally to the lower lip, or under your chin. As with the cheek implant, sutures will vary depending on whether they're internal or external.

The procedure takes 30 minutes to an hour

Lower Jaw Implant

The implant is placed inside of the lower lip. Incision site will be secured with sutures that will dissolve in about one week.

The procedure takes one to two hours.

Post Operative

Expect bruising and swelling, which can last at least two days, but this should not be excessive. Black and blue marks may be visible.

It is normal to experience some temporary difficulty with smiling and talking.

There is a risk of the facial implant shifting; which will require a corrective follow-up operation. Infection is always a risk; a course of antibiotics is often prescribed as a precautionary measure.

Your plastic surgeon will instruct you about dental hygiene, eating and any restrictions to your activities after surgery.
