DERMAL FILLERS
Non-Permanent [Up to 1 year]
Non permanent dermal fillers generally last for six to
twelve months. The most popular brands are:
Cymetra®
Processed from safe human tissue that has been donated
to US tissue banks in much the same way as transplantable
organs. It is mainly used in naso-labial and radial
lip folds, perioral lines, depressed corners of the
mouth, lip augmentation, and acne scars. It should not
be used for wrinkles around the eyes or forehead.
Dermalive® & Dermadeep®
Both are hyaluronic acid based dermal fillers with
acrylic hydrogel (a non-resorbable component). Hyaluronic
acid is completely broken down within the skin over
a period of months, but the acrylic hydrogel remains
so the effect is longer lasting [over 12 months], with
claims a permanent effect can be achieved. Main use
is for medium to deep wrinkles such as naso-labial folds
(nose to mouth lines), oral commisures (corners of the
mouth) and deep glabellar lines (vertical frown lines
between the eyebrows). It can also be used to enhance
the borders of the lips and to correct facial scars
and other minor defects. It should not be used to treat
superficial lines and wrinkles or in the body of the
lip.
Dermadeep®
This is used, in the main, for filling DEEP lines
and wrinkles, cutaneous depressions and deformities
of the face requiring large volumes. This typically
includes: cheek and chin augmentation, deep nasolabial
folds, scar correction and remodelling and correction
following rhinoplasty
Esthélis®
Is a completely biocompatible Non-Animal Hyaluronic
Acid (NaHA) gel with unusual elasticity; (mono-phasic)
giving a considerably better result from the first hours
after the injection and over the initial months, in
terms of increased volume and wrinkle filling compared
to “biphasic” products. Hyaluronic acid
is completely broken down within the skin over 6 to
9+ months, eventually leaving no trace of the filler.
Esthélis®
Mostly used for enhancement treatments for deep furrows,
lip augmentation, facial outlines, naso-labial furrows,
glabellar lines and the correction of facial depressions,
either due to injury or age-related scaring.
Esthélis® Soft
Is an ideal substance for superficial wrinkles and
can be used for perioral wrinkles, lip commissures,
crow's feet, and forehead wrinkles.
Evolence™
Is a highly purified collagen in is derived from porcine
(pig) tendons. Porcine collagen materials are often
used in human medicine, such as heart valve replacements,
implantable lenses, and surgical wound dressings. Using
Glymatrix™ technology it is able to mimic the
properties of the natural collagen found in the skin,
the manufacturers claim it will last at least 12 months.
EVOLENCE™ is not recommended for use in the eye
area.
Hydrafill®
Is a hyaluronic acid based filler and is completely
broken down within the skin over a period of months,
eventually leaving no trace of the filler. In its various
versions it is used in a nearly all areas of the face:
Hylaform
Hylaform® is derived from cockerel combs, is highly
purified and has been cross-linked to maximise its viscoelasticity
and persistence. It is particularly useful for patients
who have a tendency to develop hypertrophic scars. Duration
of effect can vary from 6 - 9 months
Juvederm
Juvederm ® also uses the filler hyaluronic acid,
with a range of gel particle sizes specifically designed
for use in certain areas of the face. On average effects
last for 6 - 9 months.
Matridur
Is a mixture of non-animal stabilised hyaluronic acid
25mg/ml and cross-linked hyaluronic acid 25mg/ml. Matridex
contains cross linked hyaluronic acid and dextranomers
(dextran molecules) and is used for finer lines such
as laughter lines around the eyes and the smoker lines
or peri-oral lines above the top lip. Matridur is completely
broken down over 6-9 months, whereas Matridex, although
the hyaluronic acid is broken down, the microspheres
remain to form a stable and permanent implant. Matridex
is used for regeneration of the soft tissue of the face
when altered by damage, disease or ageing. It can be
used for the nose to mouth lines and to remodel the
face; fill cheeks, hollows and restore contour.
Puragen™
Is a clear gel non-animal based, hyaluronic acid dermal
filler derived from bacterial fermentation. Puragen™
is the only dermal filler product which depends on double
cross-link chemistry, not particle size, to make it
last longer. Mainly used in glabellar lines (frown lines
between the eyebrows), nasolabial folds (nose to mouth
lines) and the lips however, it is suitable for treating
virtually the entire facial area. Last a minimum of
6 - 8 months, up to 1 year.
Teosyal
This range consists of three monophasic hyaluronic
acid based products of non-animal origin, which have
a reduced protein and bacterial endotoxin level resulting
in less hypersensitivity reactions. Teosyal 27g is a
dense and voluminous implant used to treat nasal furrows,
lip augmentation and facial contours. It is injected
into the deeper layers of the dermis. Teosyal 30g is
suitable for moderate wrinkles of the face and periorbital
area
Zyderm® and Zyplast®
Are implants, using Bovine dermal collagen plus 0.3%
lignocaine.
Zyderm® 1 implant Is used to treat fine lines,
wrinkles, shallow scars and thin-skinned areas.
Zyderm® 2 implant Is used to treat moderate lines,
wrinkles and scars. Both are administered by an injection
with a fine-gauge needle just beneath the surface of the
skin. Zyplast® is a form of injectable collagen that
is cross-linked with the chemical glutaraldehyde to strengthen
the collagen fibres. It is used to treat pronounced scars,
lines, and furrows, as well as to define the lip border.
Although it pays to always do a bit of your own product
research on such things as dermal fillers, don't be afraid
to ask your physician or clinician to explain the differences
between the different brands of dermal fillers and which
one is most appropriate for your needs.
